Cognitive Testing

By | March 8, 2014

The Verbal battery measures flexibility, fluency, intelligence and adaptability in reasoning with verbal materials and in solving verbal problems. These reason solving abilities play an important role in reading comprehension, critical thinking, writing, and virtually all verbal learning tasks.

The Quantitative battery measures the skills that are mostly related to problem solving in mathematics and other calculation related disciplines. The Nonverbal battery measures Cognitive Abilities through geometric shapes and figures. To score higher percentile, students must invent strategies for solving novel problems. The students must be flexible in using these strategies and accurate in implementing them.

Comparison of student’s score on each battery and the composite

As the Cognitive Testing is nationally normed, an individual student’s test score can be compared with the test score of other students throughout the nation who are of the same age. For example, a national age percentile rank of 85 on verbal reasoning means that the student scored more than 85% of the students her/his age in the national norming sample. Age percentile ranks are also provided for quantitative reasoning ability as well as nonverbal reasoning ability. The Cogat Composite Score is derived from results on the Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal batteries and is a general report of a student’s Cognitive Ability.

Do you want Private Cognitive Testing?

You may have your 3rd grade students privately tested as long as you are aware that it will be at your expense. You should also remember that having your student privately tested does not mean that he/she is automatically eligible for AG. Once the private test scores have been approved by the District Oversight Committee, then the TAG committee will check the other criteria to see the eligibility of student.

Sometimes student qualified for Math, but he/she is a really good reader. But he/she hasn’t be identified in that reading area, too? For gifted programs, teachers consider a medium of evidence that includes ability, achievement, behavior characteristics and demonstrated performance. For more information about gifted identification, visit the various Gifted and Talented Website.
