The CogAT or Cognitive Abilities Test is designed to measure student’s reason solving abilities. CogAT not only measures reason solving abilities and can also provide scores with The Iowa Tests. Generally, CogAT is utilized to help teachers or trainers to decide about student’s placement, such as selection of students for Gifted and Talented programs. CogAT Composite Score is known as combined report of for each of the 3 batteries such as Verbal, Quantitative and non-verbal.
What is CogAT Composite Score?
Cogat scores are not reported for subtests within each battery. Among the scores available for each battery are treated as the raw score, standard age score, national age and grade percentile ranks, and age and grade stanines. The raw score is the counted from number of items answered correctly. The test may also be scored locally by computer or by manual papers. Cogat answering booklets are available for hand scoring each level. For Levels A to H, they may be hand scored with either an answering booklet or an individual scoring mask.
Where the CogAT can be organized?
The CogAT can be conducted at your nearest local schools. Updates about testing dates and locations is available through your nearest local school system. You can visit on website of state standards for more details about gifted education rules and regulations in your own state. The sample test workbook may be given to you a sense of the test format, but is not enough to help prepare your child for the test. Contrary to most sources, which state that aside from a good sleep, there is no option to prepare for the CogAT, Kids have developed material that will help your child prepare.
The online CogAT test preparation includes the Forms 6 and 7 with teaching to develop question analysis skills and a vocal function with clear pronunciation. The kids have to do practice questions and exam simulations with a test bank of over 600 questions for each grade, a unique score counting system, and detailed answer explanations written clearly so students can learn right from wrong.
Students are administered the CogAT in October. Students who have scores of 80{5d32d1469be2ae4f77f8b1291fb21496347e455b3f51f679616ec0f0713fb555} or higher in CogAT, are selected for the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) reading & Math tests. Students who have scores between 70-79{5d32d1469be2ae4f77f8b1291fb21496347e455b3f51f679616ec0f0713fb555} may be given the ITBS for consideration for the Talent Development program depending on eligibility and space in the program.
Students who have scores of 85{5d32d1469be2ae4f77f8b1291fb21496347e455b3f51f679616ec0f0713fb555}ile or higher on the ITBS will then have a Gifted Rating Scale form completed. Students who have Cogat Composite Score of 90{5d32d1469be2ae4f77f8b1291fb21496347e455b3f51f679616ec0f0713fb555} or higher in all 3 areas (aptitude, achievement-reading and math) will continue to be screened in social studies and science. Parents will be notified of the child’s status on websites when all testing and forms are completed which will be early to mid-January.
Is the third grader privately tested?
You may have your 3rd grader privately tested as long as you are aware that it is at your expense. You should also be aware that having your student privately tested does not mean that he/she is automatically eligible for AG. Once the private Cogat Composite Score has been approved by the District Oversight Committee, then the TAG committee will check at the other criteria to see if your student is eligible.
