Time limits of a Cognitive Ability Test (CogAT)

By | January 5, 2021

Cogat tests have been around for quite a long time, and they are used to determine some simple things. The logical and reasoning aptitude of a person can be figured out with the administration of one of these tests, and the entire duration is not too much. Many people make the mistake of assuming that the Cogat test determines some sort of disease. That is not the case however. It is quite true that the reasoning aptitude of each person varies greatly. Knowing your own score on one of these can be quite helpful, and allows for people to understand exactly how they can improve the functioning of their brain. The Cogat test duration varies from person to person, but the amount of time involved overall always remains the same.

This test is administered in order to find out the capabilities of various students when it comes to unique study programs or to decide how well they might do in a field. It is subdivided into three basic categories, with each one having an assigned Cogat test duration. The test can be taken altogether, or separated. This is completely dependent on the student taking the exam. The subdivisions include Verbal, Non-Verbal and Quantitative. There is no amount of defined curriculum or syllabus that a student can prepare from, and it is evident that the entire thing is completely based on immediate responses. This helps to determine the logical thinking, since syllabuses can be learnt by heart and only goes so far as to show the prowess of an individual in the field of memorizing things and knowledge.

There is no actual relation between the Cogat test and an IQ Test, but the two are quite similar in some aspects. Each category determines a different aspect of thinking, and the time limits for each are as follows. The Verbal section is divided further into three categories, with each one having a Cogat test duration of 10 minutes. Each section consists of around 20 questions, meaning that the student is ideally supposed to spend 30 seconds on solving each one. Thus, the verbal round lasts for around 30 minutes in total. The second section is the Quantitative one, and is again further divided up into three categories. The total time for this one is also 30 minutes, though the breakup is in the form of 8 minutes for the first sub-section, 10 minutes for the second and finally, 12 minutes for the third. The final section is that of Non-Verbal skills, which, similar to its predecessors, comes with a time limit of 30 minutes, broken up into three sub-sections. In total, the Cogat test duration is that of 1.5 hours. They can be administered separately or altogether, and completely depends on the choice of the examinee.

Taking a Cogat test and getting a low or high score does not at all determine any sort of wellness or problems for a child. Instead, it simply highlights the potential development, and how their brains function. The Cogat test duration is simple enough to understand, and the exam ought to be taken by everyone.
