How to Interpret CogAT Scores

By | March 14, 2021

A sample CogAT score report is being given below for reference and interpreting the same.

Student NameSASAGE Scores PR SGrade Scores PR S
ABCVerbal12088 888 8
Quantitative11985 786 8
Non-Verbal13097 998 9
Composite12596 896 9

Let us now interpret the above score. ‘S’ stands for Stanines which represents a ranked comparison of the students on a nine-point scale. If the student is marked Stanines 1, 2 or 3 it means that the student is below average, stanines 4, 5 and 6 will represent average and stanines 7, 8 and 9 will represent above average students. Therefore, stanine 1 represents poor performance and stanine 9 represents top performance.

PR’ stands for Percentile Rank. IF a student scores 88 percentile, it does not mean that the student has scored 88{5d32d1469be2ae4f77f8b1291fb21496347e455b3f51f679616ec0f0713fb555} in the exam. It means that the student has performed better than 88 students if the total number of students being tested is 100. In other words, it means that the student has surpassed 88{5d32d1469be2ae4f77f8b1291fb21496347e455b3f51f679616ec0f0713fb555} students in the whole group which was tested. Therefore, score of 25 percentile to 75 percentile is average range, 75 percentile to 85 percentile represents bright students and are assumed to be high achievers, students scoring 85 percentile and above are assumed to be gifted students and the students who score more than 95 percentile are known to be very gifted students.

Further, the students appearing for the test are marked on the basis of age as well as on the basis of grades. Both the types of grading are mostly similar except in a situation where the student is significantly older or younger than other students in the same grade. Beyond this, the students are judged and graded on the basis of 4 types of tests, namely verbal test, quantitative tests, non-verbal tests and composite tests.

Verbal tests help to judge the students verbal aptitude, their word knowledge and the student’s concepts. It also helps to judge the student’s facility with language and their verbal reasoning. Therefore, a student who scores well in the verbal test are expected to do well in reading and language activities and are also expected to perform well in the classroom whereas on the other side, a low scorer will struggle with reading, writing and other language skills. Quantitative test measures the mathematical reasoning and the problem solving ability of the student. Student’s mathematical concepts, manipulations etc are also judged through this exam. Therefore, a high scorer of quantitative tests performs well with complex mathematical equations, activities and concepts.

A non verbal test helps to measure reasoning and problem solving ability with patterns, relationships and categories. High scorer of non verbal tests will do well with logic, creative thinking, technology, non-language based activities etc. Last but not the least composite test provides an overall score or total score. It is computed separately for each student and is not an addition or average of other scores. Students whose composite scores are high are gifted students having excellent skills in most of the areas.
