Cognitive Abilities Test

By | February 28, 2014

I’ve been preparing my son making up my own materials for a while but after going through this e-book I’m going to testing mom to get better materials. This is so scary what they expect our youngsters to learn the gifted and talented test. My son is taking the Cognitive Abilities Test and now I have glimpse behind the curtain of what he can expect. I would never want him to go into this test without knowledge of the concepts on these tests. It may not be fair to him or his educational success. Current public school guidelines in the US require screening for all children suspected of having a disability. If screening identifies a possible problem, an evaluation is performed by a multidisciplinary team.

How Cogat helps!

Cognitive Abilities Test

Teachers use Cognitive Abilities Test scores to help students learn more effectively. For example, if a student’s Cogat Score profile shows an uneven pattern of relative strength and weakness, the teacher can provide challenging opportunities for the student according to his/her strength. The teacher can also support aspects of new responsible tasks that rely on a student’s relative weakness. When the student has established a foothold in an area, the teacher can guide him/her to develop the relatively weaker reasoning skill by applying this skill to the familiar task.

As per the national CogAT Norms, an individual’s test score can be compared with the test performances of other group of students throughout the nation who are of the same age. For example, a national age percentile level of 85 on verbal reasoning means that the student scored higher that 85% of the students her/his age in the national norming sample. Age percentile ranks are also given for quantitative reasoning ability and for nonverbal reasoning ability. The CogAT Composite Score is derived from results on the Verbal, Quantitative, and Nonverbal batteries and is a general statement of a student’s reasoning skill.

What will you do if your child does not qualify for gifted services?

Cognitive Abilities Test administration guidelines need that 12 months pass before the same test is administered again. It is generally recommended to wait for 2 years before repeating test. If the student scores are in the high 80’s to mid 90’s, parents and teachers may consider repeating the test in the future. Retesting a child more than twice usually does not show any different results. Remember that high grades and high scores on standardized achievement tests are not necessarily indicators that a student is gifted.
